A tile bathtub surround transforms the look of a bathroom and protects the walls around your tub from moisture damage at the same time. When it is done correctly, it holds up for years with minimal maintenance. When it is done poorly, you get grout failures, water behind the walls, and a repair bill that costs more than the original installation.
At Grams Tile, Inc., we install tile bathtub surrounds for homeowners throughout Lunenburg, MA and the surrounding communities of Fitchburg, Leominster, Acton, and Groton. Every surround we build gets proper waterproofing behind the tile, not just caulk and hope.
A full three-wall surround covers the back wall and both side walls of the tub from the tub deck to the ceiling or a defined height. This is the most common project we complete for homeowners replacing old fiberglass panels or outdated tile that has failed. We take everything back to the framing, address any moisture issues we find, waterproof the walls properly, and install new tile from scratch.
If you want to keep the tub footprint but replace the bathtub entirely with a walk-in shower, we handle that too. We remove the tub and surround, prepare the space, install a professional waterproofing system, and build a full tile shower in the same area. It is one of the most popular projects we complete across central Massachusetts and one of the most impactful changes you can make to an older bathroom.
Not every project requires a full three-wall rebuild. If part of your surround is still in good shape and only one wall or section has failed, we can assess whether a targeted repair or partial replacement makes sense. We give you an honest read on what the space actually needs rather than pushing a scope larger than the situation calls for.
Every project starts with a free in-home visit. We look at your existing tub area, check the condition of the walls and substrate behind the current surround, and talk through your tile options and goals. If there is moisture damage behind the existing panels, we find it during this step, not halfway through the project.
Once we have a plan, we remove the old surround and inspect the framing and substrate. Any damaged material gets replaced before anything else happens. We then apply a waterproofing membrane to all surfaces that will be tiled, taking particular care at the corners and along the tub deck where water concentrates most.
Tile installation follows with consistent joint spacing, clean lines, and careful cuts around the tub fixtures. We grout, caulk all movement joints at the tub deck and corners, and walk through the finished work with you before we consider the job complete.
We are a locally owned tile contractor based in Lunenburg, Massachusetts. We do not subcontract. The crew that shows up for the estimate does the work.
A lot of the bathtub surround projects we complete in Fitchburg and Leominster are rebuilds of surrounds that were installed without waterproofing behind the tile. The previous installer either skipped it or used greenboard drywall instead of a proper membrane system. By the time the homeowner calls us, there is mold in the wall cavity and soft framing behind the tile. We see this regularly.
We build every surround the way it should have been built the first time. That means a membrane system behind every tiled surface, reinforced corners, properly sealed movement joints at the tub deck, and tile set with the right mortar for the application. It costs more than the cut-rate approach and it lasts far longer.
We have dozens of five-star Google reviews from homeowners across central Massachusetts. If you want to see our work before committing, ask us for references from completed bathtub surround projects in your area.

A tile surround is built on site using individual tiles set over a properly waterproofed substrate. It can be customized to any size, style, or tile selection. A prefab kit is a pre-molded acrylic or fiberglass unit installed as panels. Prefab kits cost less upfront but cannot be customized, show wear faster, and are prone to seam failures that let water behind the walls over time. Most of the surround rebuilds we do in Fitchburg and Leominster are replacements for failed prefab kits.
Most tile bathtub surround installations take 2 to 4 business days depending on the size of the surround, the tile selected, and the condition of the existing walls. Projects that require significant substrate repair or framing correction take longer. We give you a clear timeline before any work starts.
Yes. Tub-to-shower conversions are one of the most common projects we complete across central Massachusetts. We remove the existing tub and surround, prepare and waterproof the space, and install a full custom tile shower in the same footprint or larger. Most homeowners tell us it is the single best change they made to their bathroom.
Glazed porcelain is our top recommendation for most bathtub surrounds. It is denser and more water resistant than ceramic, handles daily use well, and is easy to keep clean. Large format porcelain in a 12x24 format is the most popular choice right now because it has fewer grout joints on the wall surface. If you prefer a more classic look, a 4x12 subway tile in porcelain works well and is straightforward to maintain. Natural stone is an option but requires proper sealing and more upkeep over time.
